Spider-Man: No Way Home’s silent ending endangered the MCU plot hole

The final scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Peter starting anew on his own in a new apartment, but given how the spell functions, this might lead to a plot hole.

Spider-Man radically altered Peter Parker’s life: No Way Home because he was left alone by the film’s end and had to start over from scratch. However, this tacitly exposed a significant narrative hole in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spider-Man: No Way Home introduced the various portrayals of Peter Parker by Tom Holland and established Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies as part of the MCU. That was one of the biggest multiversal adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Spider-Man requested that Doctor Strange ( portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch) use a spell to make everyone forget about Peter Parker after he inadvertently opened the portals to the multiverse. As a result, the gates got shut again, but Peter was left alone.

Peter moved to a small apartment at the end of No Way Home, where he made a new Spider-Man outfit and listened to the Police Radiofrequency to learn when the neighborhood needed Spider-Man. However, the scope of Strange’s ultimate spell can leave a storyline hole in the Marvel Cinematic Universe due to Peter’s current circumstances.

Spider-Man: No Way Home’s spell eliminated all traces of Peter’s existence

Although Peter had pledged to return to MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) when Strange’s final spell was effective, he eventually decided not to identify himself to them and fled.

Further information about Strange’s influence got revealed in the new No Way Home post-credits scene. It showed how Peter’s tangible proof of existence was altered and how he is now either absent from pictures and movies or concealed in various ways (such as his face getting obscured by a pigeon flying in front of him).

All of this would indicate that there are no records of Peter’s existence, which would suggest that he needs to have legitimate legal documents and hence would be unable to carry out many tasks, such as renting an apartment.

And yet, after No Way Home, Peter was seen moving into a brand-new, tiny apartment, akin to the small residence Peter-II (Tobey Maguire) occupied in Spider-Man 2. Unless a landlord rented the apartment to him, Peter couldn’t get a place to live so quickly without a valid ID.

Will Spider-Man 4 Break the Effect of “No Way Home”?

Peter will find it difficult to win back his friends and coworkers because he has no proof of his existence and no way to demonstrate that he previously knew MJ, Happy Hogan, Ned, and everyone else.

It became much more challenging for Peter to reverse the spell after the revelations about it that came with the new post-credits sequence in No Way Home. Still, the period likely has a defect that can assist Peter in reversing it in Spider-Man 4.

No Way Home’s script mentions MJ’s expression as having “a flicker of déjà vu on her face” when she finally sees Peter, suggesting that there may be a way to break the spell and give Peter his life back.

Although the absence of Peter Parker’s memory opens up several intriguing possibilities for Spider-Man stories in the future, it is unlikely that the spell will last for very long and be broken as soon as feasible.
