Some Details about Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale

Darren Aronofsky, a writer,  director, and producer, is renowned for his love of the weird and unexpected in his films. You can understand if you’re in for a bizarre movie, whether you’re watching the epic romance The Fountain, the psychological drama Requiem for a Dream,  or the horror allegory Mother! These kinds of tales are continued in The Whale.

The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser and Sadie Sink, centers on an obese guy trying to get back in touch with his daughter after a long separation. The Whale has drawn flak for portraying an obese person—Fraser dons a fat costume for the part—and for using a straight actor, Fraser, to play a gay character.

Fraser is “a greater actor—subtler, slyer, more surreal than he has ever been,” according to Variety, which also lauded Sink’s performance. Despite the criticism surrounding the movie, the actor is a front-runner this season for several lead actor honors.

Since Fraser’s career stopped in the late 2000s, his recent re-entry into the national spotlight makes his success in the role all the more meaningful. The actor’s return to the acting world has thrilled Fraser’s fans. Brendan Fraser won the Best Actor award for The Whale at the Critic Association of Central Florida.

Fraser received nominations for the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards and the Best Actor at the 2023s Golden Globe Awards (80th).

Is The Whale available on streaming services?

Still not. The Whale is currently only shown in theatres. Recently, Aronofsky announced on Instagram that the movie would “NOT be streaming anytime soon” and urged viewers to go to the cinema to see it. There you have it, then. Your best bet is to go to your local theatre if you want to see it before the award season is over.

The Whale might be streamable later this year. However, A24 needs to have a spot where their movies are streamed consistently. Bodies Bodies Bodies from 2022 isn’t available to stream anyplace without renting it, even if you do subscribe to the service, unlike  X,  say, and The Green Knight, which are available to stream on Showtime and other services with a subscription. The Whale won’t be available for home viewing for some time.
