Review of Shotgun Wedding film
Here comes Shotgun Wedding, with a prehistoric shark for company, and 2023 is looking like an excellent year for movies. Not even the existentially troubling film makes you wonder where you fit in the big picture. The drab and clumsy nature of Shotgun Wedding is just dreadful. JLo made it even more revolting to partake in such a demeaning practice.
Tom (Josh Duhamel) and Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) are getting married on a stunning island in the Philippines. Despite Marge, the manager’s best efforts, there are obstacles to overcome, as there are at all weddings. Tom wants to give Darcy the perfect wedding while demonstrating to his in-laws that he is the best man for their daughter. Darcy wants her wealthy father, Robert ( played by Cheech Marin), to refrain from the foot of the bill.
Jamie (Callie Hernandez), Darcy’s sister, is a bit of a wild child and is getting up to mischief with best man Ricky (played by Desmin Borges) when she is supposed to arrive to fix Darcy’s hair. Darcy ends up with something resembling a “condo” on her head because Jamie isn’t there to stop her future mother-in-law Carol’s (Jennifer Coolidge) excesses.

Darcy’s parents are divorced, and her mother Renata ( acted by Sônia Braga), while mocking Tom as a groomzilla (he does demand perfection, down to the pineapple arrangements), gripes about Harriet, Robert’s girlfriend ( played by D’Arcy Carden) grinning at her.
Darcy’s ex-boyfriend, Lenny Kravitz, performs a dramatic chopper drop at the wedding, which only exacerbates the situation (although Lenny did not RSVP). He interrupts Tom’s speech by sharing tender and amusing tales of his time spent with Darcy while serving in the Peace Corps in Bali, and he charms everyone in attendance, even Tom’s calm, modest father, Larry ( acted by Steve Coulter).
Then, while the guests wait for the bride to go down the aisle and the happy couple is engaged in an argument involving many, “you said,” the pirates show up. Detective John McClane won’t be chanting Yippee-Ki-Yay to Shotgun Wedding reasonably soon. It’s intended to be Die Hard at a wedding.
The jokes are less funny than yesterday’s uthappam, and it could be more tasteful to blow out people’s brains. The rom-com, the action film, the action-comedy, or the bloody dissection à la Tarantino are all options. That one does not fit into any of those categories is a bummer. Shotgun Wedding resides in a separate section of hell, where scary films go to die.
