One of the most important, yet overlooked aspects of gaming are gaming desks. Keyboards, graphics cards, chairs, gaming glasses and headsets always seem to be higher on the priority list.
So in this article, we’re going to page homage to the humble gaming desk. We’ll show you (what we think) are the best gaming desks and give you tips on how to create the best desk for gaming.
What Are Gaming Desks and Why Do I Need One?
There aren’t many affordable desks made just for gamers. With that said, there are many office desks which will work well. That’s because the needs of the office worker and a gamer are very similar.
Let’s be honest about this, we could call any flat surface that our PC, consoles, and screens sit on a gaming desk. What we’re actually talking about are computer desks which are best to use as gaming desks.
Just like when you’re buying any other piece of gaming equipment, you need to make sure it’s fit for purpose. Buying the wrong desk is going to get really annoying really quickly.
What to Consider When Buying a New Desk
Before purchasing your new gaming desk make sure you consider the following points;
- Weight capacity – You need to ensure the desk you buy can hold the weight of your expensive hardware.
- Layout – Before buying a new gaming desk take stock of what you need to put on it and where it will go in your home/office.
- Shape and dimensions – You need to be aware of how much floor space your new gaming desk will likely take up.
- Desk space – Make sure your new gaming desk has enough physical space for everything you need.
- Cable management – Do you need a solution to keeping your cables and leads tidy or does the desk have in-built management?
As long as you consider all these points before purchase then you should be happy with whatever you buy.
The Best Gaming Desks: Our Top Recommendations
There are so many different sizes and shaped gaming desks available. So, we’ve broken them down into categories.
1. The best standard I shaped gaming desk
2. The best L shaped or corner gaming desk
3. The best budget gaming desk.

The Atlantic Gaming Desk: The Best I Shaped Gaming Desk
We loved the look of this Atlantic Gaming desk. It is a little unconventional but the level of functionality you get is excellent. Especially considering the price!
It’s the perfect all in one unit for gamers. It even comes with a drinks holder so you no longer have to choose between your K/D ratio and your hydration.
In our opinion, the Atlantic gaming desk has to be the best I shaped gaming desk. As pretty hardcore gamers, our desks are always littered with headsets, controllers, drinks and all kinds of other stuff. This is why we loved the Atlantic gaming desk. They have a place for everything.
There’s a charging station for your mobile phone or tablet. For storing your controllers, headsets and games etc, there are holders everywhere. So now your gaming space can be tidy instead of looking like a grenade has come out of the game and gone off in front of you.
And DON’T sleep on the value of the cup holder. If you’re a hardcore gamer or even a thirsty casual one, you’ll know the dangers of having drinks on your desk. You might have had the experience of spilling your drink all over your hardware…
All that risk is gone with the inclusion of a simple cup holder and it’s big enough to take most drinks.
The basic layout of the desk is straightforward. There’s a stand for your monitor which you can remove if you have a multiple screen setup. It’s suitable for monitor desk clamps as well.
You can mount your speakers off to either side for good spatial sound, too.
This gaming table comes flat packed and like all flat pack furniture, we dreaded having to assemble it. But, all the holes were pre-drilled and the whole thing was pretty easy to put together. The instructions were easy to understand, even for those like us who don’t usually do well following instructions.
And everything on this desk is solid metal! It doesn’t feel flimsy so you won’t be disappointed with the build quality, it’s rock solid.
We think the Atlantic Gaming desk is pound for pound the best gaming I shaped gaming desk on the market. It has been designed with the needs and wants of gamers in mind.
And it’s not expensive.
Considering the build quality and the thought that has gone into making it, we’d go as far to say it’s pretty cheap!
The Best L Shaped Gaming Desk
Best Budget Gaming Desk: IKEA Linnmon/AdilsSpektrum
This IKEA Linnmon desk is as simple as can be with one of the lowest prices in the market. The desk minutes to assemble and it literally takes minutes – it simple, quick and easy.
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money of a high-end gaming desk then this is the desk for you. It does exactly what it says on the box and comes from IKEA which means it’s cheap and usually pretty good.
This desk is the bargain of the century. It looks good and does the job!
This is one of the best value for money gaming desks on the market. Let’s get this out in the open early, it is nothing special, it’s as basic as can be. But for the price point it should it’s definitely worth considering.
The desk comes from IKEA so assembly is straightforward. Even a novice will have it up in less than 20 minutes . The legs are quite skinny so we recommend putting it right up against a wall for a bit of extra support to be safe. It will take two screens with enough room for your keyboard and mouse.
Because these table are produced at a low cost, the materials aren’t as robust. They’re made from particle board which isn’t as strong as solid wood, metal or glass. This means you can’t use screen clamps as they will leave dents and maybe even break the table.
Although this desk is just 4 legs and a table top, with some thought you can have a very inexpensive gaming desk setup. Especially if you apply some of our tips and tricks to improving any gaming desk as mentioned above.
Best Sitting / Standing Desk: Tranzendesk Standing Desk
If you spend long hours at your gaming desk you may need to adopt an ergonomically friendly approach. Sitting for long hours at a time can cause severe backache as well as other health concerns. That’s why we included this standing desk this in our list of the best.
With its easy crank height adjustment, you can play your games while sitting or standing. Many of these kinds of desks are electric so you can adjust them with the touch of a button. That said, they’re usually very expensive and not always worth it in our opinion.
Adjusting the height of the desk is easy via the hand crank. There’s plenty of space for multiple monitors and room underneath for your legs.
Cable management needs thinking about thought. There needs to be enough slack cable in order for the desk to go up and down fully whilst not looking messy. Have a look at some of our suggestions for improving your gaming desk later in this article.
5 Tips and Tricks to Upgrading Your Current Setup
If you’re not happy with your current gaming setup there are a few things you can do to upgrade and improve your gaming experience. If you follow these six tips you can immediately improve your gaming desk.
- Tidy up the cables – This is a simple step but one that many gamers overlook. There’s no cheaper and more effective way to hide a big pile of cables than with cable sleeving. Cable management sleeving has slots cut along the length to allow cables to poke out exactly where you need them. Turn 10 cables into 1 cable and keep everything tidy. You even get the choice of black or white to suit your desk.
- Add a bit of green – The small things really do make a big difference and adding some decor to your desk will make it look nicer. Adding an artificial table plant is a good contrast to all the technology on your desk. It will keep you connected with nature which, believe it or not, is important. Being locked up in a room and in front of a screen all day isn’t good for you! And the good thing about an artificial plant is that you can’t kill it!
- Get a laptop stand – If you game on a laptop or netbook you might want to invest in a good laptop stand. A lot of people strain their necks and back by crouching over a small laptop for long periods of time. Raising the laptop to eye level will make a big difference to your posture, reducing the issue of back pain.
- Try Standing – Sitting for long periods of time isn’t good for your back so why not try standing? This Standing Desk Converter fits to your current desk. It elevates your screen and equipment to standing height and when you want to go back to sitting, adjust it to your sitting height. Not only does this help with your posture in a big way, but standing while gaming can improve performance.
- Get some LED’s – A lot of high end gaming set ups are amazingly well lit and you can get this effect with LED strip lighting kit. You can turn your outdated gaming setup into something quite special. These strips are pretty cheap and easy to install. They come with an adhesive back which means you can put them around your desk and have a nice backlit effect.
The gaming desk is probably the most product in a world where graphics cards, ultra-wide monitors, and mechanical keyboards take priority. Yet every gamer is different. The best gaming desks mean different things to different people. It comes down to personal preference.
We have shown you what we think are the best gaming desk and how to easily upgrade your current space.

Anything you can sit and game in is a gaming chair, right?
Well, not really. It takes a good bit more than that to make a great one. If you pick wisely, you get two HUGE benefits from a gaming chair:
1. A much healthier back, and you’ll appreciate that both now AND thirty years from now!
2. You’ll dominate like never before during gaming sessions
Gaming Without the Right Chair is Hazardous
The makers of this must be on a mission to ruin backs worldwide
The truth is that gaming is a very sedentary hobby. We gamers spend a lot of time either sitting on the floor, sofa or at our gaming desks, so it can get uncomfortable trying to maintain any kind of decent posture. Game for a few hours in random positions and you’ll feel all kinds of muscle fatigue setting in.
Sitting for a prolonged period of time can have a severe impact on your long-term health. A study found that over 15 million workdays were lost in 2013 due to bad backs as a result of sitting in uncomfortable chairs. Think about how many gaming hours have been lost. It’s enough to drive you to tears.
Spending a long time in front of a screen on your favorite game can be very taxing on you. Your eyes can experience fatigue, (which you could help by investing in a pair of Gaming Glasses) and your body is generally affected by your seating position.
Ergonomics Can Save You From Permanent Damage
Even worse, your posture permanently changes when you sit improperly for long stretches and that’s going to haunt a ton of gamers with a vengeance in their adult and senior years. Without an ergonomic gaming chair, your lifelong comfort is truly at stake.
Ergonomics is key to a good gaming chair. The very best PC gaming chairs will help to improve posture, making longer gaming sessions easier to live with.
If you watch carefully, EVERY major game streamer on Twitch, YouTube or Steam is using legit gaming chairs these days because they put in the level of screentime that require great cushions and lumbar support. And the smart ones still take breaks because even with the best ergonomically designed gaming chair, it’s smart to stretch out every few hours. Getting up and walking and move around can reduce any pain and discomfort you might feel later.
Are Gaming Chairs Expensive?
This might be an extreme example but any true gamer understands that there’s a price to be paid – in performance and posture – for scrunching up
The fact is that a good chair can save you lots of pain now and keep you from developing horrible back issues later. And the top of the line chair costs about the same as a really good video card.
Is that expensive considering the benefits I described? Of course not! But I know that the mentality of most gamers is so whack that they’ll buy the most epic hardware available and scrunch down in a beanbag chair to get their game on.
Don’t be THAT idiot.
Besides, when I hit the 5 hour mark in a marathon session from my gaming chair, I still feel like I’m sitting on a cloud. You’re switching positions every 15 minutes to try to keep the aches away, man. Guess who’s winning the chicken dinner?
Anyway, I’ve included some nice gaming chairs that are less than $200. That’s not gonna be the ideal chair BUT I guarantee you it beats most.
Below we have compiled a guide of what to look for when considering buying the gaming chair.
What Gaming Chair Is Right for You?
Finding the best gaming chair for you specifically can be hard. A lot of it comes down to your body size, gaming style and personal preferences and so this review of chairs runs a lot longer than most.
I’ve tested more chairs than I can count because I’m 6 feet, 5 inches tall and my body kills me if I spend hours gaming from the wrong angle.
I’ve broken down what I consider to be the best gaming chairs on the market, but there are lots of variables between people’s needs so I’ll also point out features that can be crucial for some of you and not so important for others. You can jump straight to the chair recommendations if you’re in a hurry, but I want to first give a rundown of the major gaming chair options and discuss how you can match these up with your own requirements to pick the chair that will keep you happy for years.
Before purchasing a new gaming chair, make sure you consider the following points:
- Value for Money – You’ll want to buy a gaming chair that’s within your budget, while making sure you get the best chair you can afford. I’m no fan of wasting unnecessary money, but the number of hours some of us will spend in gaming chairs is incredible, and you want one that’s built to last.
- Ergonomic consideration – In other words seating position. Getting the right gaming chair can put a stop to potential musculoskeletal disorders that can arise from a poor quality chair. Almost no gamer sits up straight and proper through a marathon Madden session (you know what I’m talking about) but a really good set of cushions on a chair mean that you want b getting up the next day feeling like you slept in a loaded dumpster.
- Style – Make sure the chair you buy suits your setup. I’ll admit – I want my gear to look good and so I’m a big fan of the ones with plenty of color.
- Adjustment – Make sure your new gaming chair has all the adjustment you’re looking for. Actually, you might not even know ahead of time what tweaks you’ll need, so find a highly adjustable gaming chair so that you can make it perfect for fitting your frame and play style.
Consideration 1: PC/Desktop Gaming vs. Console Gaming
The “best” chair definitely depends on how you game. A desk chair and a chair for console gaming are extremely different
If you spend all your gaming (and/or work) time at a desk, it’s pretty likely that you’ve already got a chair of some sort. The first section of my chair recommendations is designed to see if we can find you something that is an upgrade over the basic desk chair.
What are the best PC gaming chair options?
- adjustable height
- adjustable armrests
- comfortable seat cushion
- firm lumber support
- cushioned headrest
On the other hand, most console gamers are using seating with zero, or poor, support. The two dudes pictured above are sadly not a rare occurrence. And don’t think that couch gaming is much better, either! Soft DOES NOT equal support.
What are the best console gaming chair options?
- firm lumbar support
- comfortable seat cushion
- cushioned headrest
- great wireless sound system
- subwoofer vibration mode
- solid battery life
The Best PC Gaming Chair: My Top Recommendations
Every desktop gaming chair requires adjustable height controls because desk heights vary, as does monitor position and your own stature. You have to also be a stickler for firm lumbar support. Beyond that, it can be more flexible so we’ll size up factors like cushioning, adjust-ability throughout and overall build quality.
PC gaming chairs don’t usually include on-board sound, so use a set of good quality speakers to get that full immersion feeling.
AmazonBasics Mid-Back Office Chair Review: Best Gaming Chair Under $100
AmazonBasics Mid-Back Office Chair (Black) has 4 of 5 Stars on Amazon
This chair offers a sensible style to your gaming setup. It’s plenty comfortable and offers the most bang if your budget is at an absolute minimum.
As video game chairs go it is not the most exciting and it’s far away from being the award of ‘ultimate’ gaming chair. That said, the build quality is solid and it has soft cushions that should allow you to game way longer without discomfort.
And this low price is the reason it made our list. (Also, an honorable mention/budget shout out to the Homall Leather Gaming Chair for being awesome at less than $100 too!)
The back of this chair is pretty comfortable but it doesn’t keep you very straight from side to side, so you could find yourself leaning left or right if not paying attention. It also may not be ideal for the tallest gamers (like me) who are going to have a lot of their upper backs exposed and not posture-optimized. That always made my shoulders ache after an hour or two, so something with a higher back might be a better choice if you’re not average height or even shorter.
This AmazonBasics budget gaming chair is fully adjustable with pneumatic controls which allow you to raise and lower the seat, as well as rock back in your chair. There’s no adjusting those armrests and the cushion there is pretty skimpy.
This is still arguably the best gaming chair under $100 on the market today, and I promise you, the long-term health of your back back is worth MANY TIMES what you’ll pay for this. If you have a tight budget, I’d either go with this one or the Homall Leather Gaming Chair mentioned above.
I’d give the nod to the Homall one if you’re taller than, say, 6′ because it has the back support you’ll need. Build quality on each is acceptable for the price.
AmazonBasics High-Back Executive Chair Review: Best Budget Gaming Chair
If you’re fairly tall, this High-Back chair has an Executive style at a budget price
If you can swing a bit more than $100 for your PC desktop chair, I’ll highly recommend the High-Back Executive from Amazon. It’s a taller version of the one reviewed above, but also has much better cushioning and adjustable controls.
With the high-back model, you’ll feel like you’re properly positioned right up to your shoulders. That will make it a whole lot easier to continue gaming for extended periods. Additionally, I felt that the extra cushions alongside the back kept me far straighter upright than the mid-back did, and that’s a big winner for maintaining my posture long term.
One caveat, though. Stated weight limit is just 250 pounds, so it’s great for tall guys but not necessarily the big boys.
Like its less expensive sibling, this one only comes in black. But it’s a very smooth and attractive looking chair, and while it’s not actual leather upholstery, nothing about it appears cheap or flimsy.
In fact, the controls for adjustment felt very solid. Within five minutes, I had it positioned for exactly the right height. I figured out how to tilt the seat to suit my monitor level, and you can even adjust the amount of front to back swaying that you can do.
With this chair, Amazon is clearly going after a market that a lot of other gaming chair makers charge $200 and up for. If you can live without fancy color combinations, this will make a world of difference for your back and it’s very budget friendly.
Things I Really Like:
- Excellent upper back support
- Easy to operate controls for adjustment
- Slick, professional look to the chair
- Upholstery looks like it could be damaged if careless
- 250 pound weight limit

Furmax High-Back Gaming Chair Review: A Footrest, Too? What?!?!
Don’t let the childlike color fool you. This chair is made for serious gaming business!
I’m not gonna lie, I don’t know a thing about Furmax outside of this one particular gaming chair. In fact, when I was first shopping on Amazon for something that was built for my height, I flew past this one because the bright blue was just a little too much for my eyes.
Then I came back on my second pass through and began to appreciate the level of innovation that was built into this Furmax High-Back gaming chair. It isn’t the only chair to have these features, but it’s the only one that has all of them.
Okay, so let’s start by talking about the most important feature. This chair has a dedicated lumbar support cushion that can be adjusted up and down to hit your sweet spot.
It also has a pretty extensive set of adjustment features, although I thought that the height adjustment control felt a little bit at risk of breaking if someone frustrated were to start yanking on it.
But let’s talk about this footrest. This was the first chair I’ve ever tried with a foot rest, so I wasn’t exactly sure how that made sense for somebody sitting at a desk. I mean, there’s only so much room for your legs to stretch out. Right?
Well, here’s how I think it is supposed to work. The foot rest swings up to give your legs flat place to rest on and it slides out so that you can position it far enough down your leg that you don’t feel everything is dangling.
The back itself tilts into a reclining position, so this chair is perfect for that refreshing power nap whenever you want to. Just spin the foot rest to one side of your desk, recline fully, and become an instant master of the universe.
Now let’s talk about this upholstery. I’m still not crazy about the blue, and I rather doubt that I ever will be. However, it is made out of some durable PU leather based on some research I did, I gather that this material is sort of a cross between nice polyurethane and some sort of bonded leather product.
The bottom line is that the whole structure seems very solid. It has a high-back, so you’ll definitely feel relief up in your shoulders. And it also has an acceptable weight limit of 310 pounds. I know there are guys who are bigger than that and need a chair for gaming, but I think a chair like this is still useful for about 95% of the gamer population.
Things I Really Like:
- Ability to position dedicated lumbar support cushion
- Has great controls for making adjustments
- Footrest and reclining back perfect for encouraging work or game breaks
- Really durable upholstery
Things I Would Like to See Different:
- Would definitely like to see less flashy color scheme
- A more durable height adjustment lever
- Cushioning on the armrests

The GM Seating Ergolux Genuine Leather Executive Hi Swivel Chair is like sitting on a gaming cloud, but the price tag is pretty high for the average marathon gamer
The GM ErgoLux has to be one of the most comfortable chairs for gaming although it definitely comes with a hefty price tag. If you’re looking a budget gaming chair, this isn’t for you.
But if you have a decent income and already understand the long-term damage that crappy gaming seating can have on your back, this is a bit like taking out a $600 insurance policy on wellness. No, it’s not cheap but the Ergolux chair more than justifies its expense with gorgeous looks and fantastic functionality.
When reviewing this chair we were amazed at the level of adjustment. Every part is adjustable so you can make it fit perfectly. This is extremely important if you are insanely tall like I am, or if you’ve been packing on winter weight by guzzling case after case of Mountain Dew or Sam Adams.
It’s hard to find a chair here the actual customer reviews are more positive. In fact, in researching user reviews we see that it has also been recommended by chiropractors to help those suffering from bad backs due to chronic gaming posture or other back problems that limit computer and console access otherwise.
If you’re already paying the physical price for your gaming addiction, I strongly suggest that you figure out how to get this chair into your life.
When assembling this beauty, it would be advisable to get a friend to help. Its high level of quality and features means that it’s quite heavy and could be difficult to assemble alone. It should take two people no more than 30-40 minutes to put it together and tweak for your height and weight particulars.
Although this gaming chair is actually an office chair they will do the same job of keeping you comfortable during those long gaming sessions. The bottom line is that we just forget to mind our posture whether it’s hours of PUBG or days of programming – but a chair like this puts you at the right, comfortable angle.

Merax High Back Racing Style Gaming Chair Review
If you are after a DXRacer or AKRacing chair but don’t want to spend the huge amount of money needed to get one of those most famous gaming chairs then the Merax gaming chair is really worth considering.
A number of different colors are available so you can once again pick the perfect accompaniment to your existing gaming setup.
This gaming chair can is an ergonomic gaming chair which is very popular among gamers.
Ergonomic chairs are easy to identify. All you have to do is look at the large price tag. That said, after using the Merax gaming chair it’s clear that not all ergonomic gaming chairs are that expensive.
We felt it was the ideal chair for playing longer sessions and we loved the racing design and the removable lumbar support pillow adds another optional level of comfort. It does take some getting used to but after a few hours, we felt it was a real bonus.
The soft PU leather is very comfortable and durable. It also has a mesh fabric layer which helps the chair breath and cope with long gaming sessions.
This Merax is the king of inexpensive gaming chairs. It offers everything that the more expensive gaming chairs. Including the ability to tilt back which is great if you want to take a break after a heavy gaming session.
Obviously, the quality isn’t of the high standard of the more expensive gaming chairs but it is good enough. The stitching looks tough and like it would last a long time but only time will tell.

We all come in different shapes and sizes. For that reason, I’ll always recommend that you favor a PC gaming chair with adjustable controls and cushions.
So there’s a range of chairs at a range of prices from $60 up to $700+. Every single one of them has the potential to help your back, but remember to keep your height in mind. High-back chairs for tall folks, etc.
Don’t get suckered into buying a flashy, overpriced chair just because some YouTube pro is pushing it.. you could easily wind up dropping 2-3x what’s necessary! And feel free to give us input right below. I’d love to know what you buy and how it works out for you.
Happy gaming, y’all.
PS – If you game on either Playstation or Sony Xbox, especially hooked up to a television, jump over to the review I did of the best console gaming chairs. I picked out the ones that will make you most comfortable in that environment, and some of the wireless sound setups on those chairs is INSANE!
Certain close members of my family will tell you that I game A LOT. In fact, the bullets are flying constantly in my living room and it’s a miracle that the bomb and grenade explosions haven’t yet made the neighbors sell their house and move away.
Speakers are often forgotten about because gaming monitors, keyboards, desks and chairs take top spots on most wishlists. So this article is dedicated to finding the best gaming speakers for PC and console gamers.
Yes, I have an absolute beast of a sound setup, which I’ll describe for you later. But here’s a list that pretty much takes you through all the research I went through when I was trying to figure out how to get the best gaming speakers that weren’t so expensive that my girlfriend would walk out in disgust.
Don’t Let Them Sneak Up On You
If THIS guy’s on your six, you want surround sound
I’m old enough to remember when gaming soundtracks were pretty much crap and weapon sounds were even worse! Back then you could slap a cheap pair of 5-inch plastic speakers on either side of your computer monitor and deal with it.
But nowadays… woah… try pulling out an old set of plasticky Cyber Acoustics from 2005 and you’ll easily miss 9/10ths of the action going on around you. Game developers have dramatically upped the immersion factor of modern games and your sound gear has got to keep pace.
If you play ANY shooters online, the guy with the surround sound setup has got the jump. Period.
It doesn’t matter if it’s zombies, assassins or Nazis. You need way better equipment to hear the crafty enemies that are out of your field of vision but still close enough to kill. Nothing would get me down more than being raked from behind by a bunch of chumps in Fortnite, so I solved my problem by finding the gaming speaker upgrade that I’m going to tell you about a bit later.
What I love about computer equipment is that performance (in general) keeps going up far faster than prices do, which is a big win if you want to upgrade your gaming setup one piece at a time. Honestly, a simple pair of AmazonBasics desktop speakers runs about $15 and blows away what used to cost twice that about 5 years ago.
Before we start ranking and rating speaker systems, let’s talk about some of the standard terms, types and connections.
Speaker Tech 101: A Crash Course
What is 2-channel sound?
Often called simply ‘stereo’ sound, 2-channel attempts to present audio as it would come from either your right or your left. When rendered with the proper equipment, you will hear sound coming from those two directions.
What is 2.1 multichannel sound?
A step beyond plain, 2-channel sound, 2.1 adds a subwoofer component to the mix. So you still have the left-right distinction as above but the addition of the subwoofer makes it possible to deliver more accurate bass.
Bass was one of the toughest things for old desktop speakers to deliver, so the addition of the subwoofer was a welcome step. While 2-channel sound had been capable of simulating that fighter plane sweeping from your left to the right, the subwoofer could help you feel the rumble of its throaty engines.
What is 5.1 multichannel sound?
Put simply, the ‘5’ in 5.1 means that a system can simulate sound coming from 5 points around your location. When gamers use the term surround sound, this is what they mean… the ability to interpret where the action is taking place around them.
It took a while for computer technology to develop process this many distinct sound tracks in realtime, but every popular video card on the market now can handle the task with ease.
If 5.1 multichannel is good, will 7.1 be great?
Naturally, 7 is better coverage than 5. But the incremental joy you’ll get with a 7.1 multichannel setup is probably less than you’d guess. Spatial sound processing (encoding and decoding) has already made 5.1 sound nearly like a 360-degree experience.
A nicely-engineered set of 5.1 gaming speakers will rock all but the largest of rooms, I assure you. It’s also extremely atmospheric when you’re creeping through the Skitterweb Tunnels in WoW or hitting the ground running in the Montana badlands of Far Cry 5.
Are Gaming Speakers Expensive?
Well, they can be. There are always companies that build audiophile speakers, but I don’t think it’s anywhere near necessary to spend big money for an awesome gaming experience.
My favorite gaming speakers are all under $100, and you can even find big sound (though maybe not quite as crisp) for half of that price!
Things to Remember BEFORE You Hit the Buy Button
Firstly, you have to make sure your new speakers have exactly the connection types you need. Most PC computer gamers are using motherboard-based audio these days, using 3.5mm stereo inputs. Finding a compatible speaker set for those is no problem at all, but make sure you are getting an adequate amount of speaker wire. Even a 15′ by 12′ room requires nearly 100 feet of it to give you true flexibility in speaker placement.
Console gamers have a few decisions to make that PC gamers do not. First of all, if you’re connected to an average TV’s sound you’re gonna hate the result. There are very robust soundbars out now that do their best to simulate surround sound, but hardcore gamers know that it doesn’t translate very well in something hectic like a first-person shooter game.
That leaves you with three big options, really. One is to outfit the TV with a true theatre/gaming setup, and that gets super-expensive really fast – especially if installation technicians are needed to keep the living room or family room looking uncluttered when the job is finished.
The second option is to get a proper mixer and patch your PS4 or Xbox sound into your computer speakers. I’ve done that and it was a very simple setup overall.
Finally, you could opt for a great console gaming headset and be done with it all in a hurry. That puts the mic right where you need it, gives you very acceptable spatial sound separation AND keeps your marathon gaming sessions from causing the neighbors to send the police over for a chat.
Best Gaming Speakers: My Top Recommendations
Desktop Gaming Speaker Category (Includes 2.0 Powered Monitors and 2.1 When Subwoofer Available)
Mackie CR3: CR Series Multimedia Monitors
The Mackie CR3 speakers provide great 2-channel (stereo) sound and the convenience of a front-panel volume knob and AUX input
This is a “simple” set of 2 desktop-sized speakers that provide excellent 2-channel sound at a price that won’t break your budget. In fact, they sound absolutely amazing!
First of all, they’re visually attractive. The cabinets themselves are black and 100% wood, with very tasteful green highlighting. They sit comfortably on most desks with a width and depth of right around 6″ and a height around 9″ when you use the included (and awesome) isolation pads that sit between the speaker and desktop to minimize rattle or distortion at higher volume levels.
The front of each monitor is really sharp AND useful with an AUX input plug if you want to rock tunes from your tablet or phone, a headphone ouput plug and a spinner volme know that has a circular green-lit highlight around it for night use. There’s no fumbling around for the remote or reaching around to the back – so easy to use and it looks awesome when the room is dark.
These do not come with a subwoofer, but there are other options in the Mackie Creative Reference Series of speakers that we will discuss below. But honestly, most small to medium-sized rooms will be perfect for these. With a full-range frequency response of 80 Hz – 20 kHz and power at 50 watts, you have all the sound you need for crystal-clear music and gaming.
Things I Love:
– lighted volume control on the front
– AUX input plug on the front
– Isolation pads to sit under each speaker
– Uber-clear 3-inch woofers
– Top-quality cabinets that look very smooth
Things I Think Are Missing:
– Subwoofer for more bass
You can grab the Mackie CR3 speakers here, but read on first to see what your other options are.
Mackie CR4BT: CR Series Multimedia Monitors
The Mackie CR4BT adds a larger, 4-inch woofer to the mix and also bluetooth-streaming from the device f your choice.
If you were to tell me that you were willing to plunk down $100 and no more for your gaming speakers, I’d say the Mackie CR3 above are your very best budget speakers. But you’re going to stumble upon some music, and at least a few games, where the extra bass that comes from either a subwoofer or bigger woofers would make all the difference.
And for that reason, I’d like to suggest the Mackie CR4BT speakers. For more money you are adding features to the already-incredible CR3.
The CR4BT comes with a beefier 4″ woofer. For those of you who have some audio experience, you’ll already know that larger woofers can quickly ramp up the bass. Of course, too much bass can make it hard to pick out the mids – but that’s a prioritization that every person has to decide for themselves.
These speakers also include bluetooth streaming, so if you want to stream Spotify from your phone but can’t be thethered to your desk while doing so, just pair up with the CR4BTs and off you go!
Look, these cost more $$$ than the CR3 (which I love!) because you get two main features – larger woofers and bluetooth streaming – that the CR3 doesn’t have. But both of them have tons of the key features that make Mackie a great desktop speaker option.
Things I Love:
– the beefed-up woofer makes gaming so much more immersive
– the bluetooth streaming is really nice – pairs up easily and lets you move around with phone in handle
– all the stuff I raved about with the CR3… these look beautiful, sound spectacular and have crazy-useful front-panel features like volume and AUX input
Things I Think Are Missing:
If Money is No Object: Klipsch R-15PM Powered Monitors and R-10SW Surround Subwoofer
Klipsch is one of the top brands in audio technology so, not surprisingly, there’s tremendous sound quality from these R-15PM cabinets.
This one is for the audiophiles and budding producers.
Not a lot of people would even consider spending so much money on a pair of of monitors. Especially considering the quality of some of the budget speakers like the Mackie choices above.
That said, there is a reason why these Klipsch R-15PMs command such premium bucks. Premium price means premium sound, and the R-15PMs deliver a clarity from tweeter to woofer that will have you noticing fresh nuances within tracks that you have already heard dozens of times.
The’re truly spectacular in every respect.
They’re designed with their own high-end phono pre-amp built into the body of the speakers. If you are frustrated by the ridiculously low sound output from TVs, you can hook these up to and modern television and the ultra-low noise amplifier will give you all the sound you’ve been missing. It’s a home theater setup without a bunch of unnecessary clutter and complication.
The R-15PMs also come with 3.5mm aux, bluetooth, digital optical, analog RCA and USB inputs. One nitpick is that all of these inputs is on the speaker’s back, and I find that frustrating – especially not having the volume know and AUX input handy like the Mackie monitors do.
These are pretty big on a desk. You’ll need about an 8″ footprint for each one and they rise to a height of 13″ or so.
To take the sound quality to insane levels, you can pair the R-15PMs with a matched Klipsch subwoofer. Yes, you’ve now spent hundreds of dollars on your setup but you can just sit at your desk for days and days slobbering over how amazing everything will sound. Your music? Like being in-studio with the musicians.
Consider adding the subwoofer for epic sound quality
Your games? Have you ever picked a lock in Assassin’s Creed and heard exactly what a professional thief listens for when he does it? It almost pulls you out of real life and shoves you into the story.
We recommend pairing up with the Klipsch R-10SW to kick this sound quality from stratospheric to interstellar. It produces possibly the most complete sound we have ever heard from a set of desk speakers.
There are certain experiences in life that we will decide to spend extra on, and I can see why this Klipsch speaker-subwoofer combo would be one of those passion purchases. Yes, they are pricey, but if you are in the market for high end sound, there are plenty of reasons to take a long look at Klipsch.
They are as good as desktop speakers get. And, when combined with the versatility of having so many different inputs as well as built in pre-amp, there’s a lot to love with these wooden and copper cubes.
As an aside, you can choose between Cherry and Black cabinets for these speakers, but the Cherry model is (without a doubt) the best-looking desktop speaker set that I have ever seen.
Things I Love:
– Excellent low noise pre-amp fleshes out the sound spectrum beautifully
– Perfection in sound with the subwoofer; but still priceless without it
– Cherry cabinet option that looks better than anything on the market
– Robust set of inputs
– Comes with a really nice IR remote
Things I Think Are Missing:
– Front-panel inputs (esp. AUX and volume control)
Creative Inspire T6300 5.1 Channel 22W with Subwoofer
A very solid 5.1 setup, the T6300 can solve your true surround sound need without breaking the bank
These Creative Inspire speakers are our number 1 pick for the average gamer, especially if you’re into atmospheric RPGs and FPSs where sound direction is almost a character of its own.
They’re in the middle of our price-range and come with a full complement of 5 satellite speakers and subwoofer. Which means you get full surround sound at a reasonable cost.
While it’s not a ‘professional’ setup, they won’t break the bank and are a brilliant choice for those looking to upgrade to 5.1.
The subwoofer is the main hub for the speakers, with all the satellite speakers plugging into that along with the inputs from the PC.
To get the best out of the T6300 system you will need a motherboard or soundcard to push all of the separate sound and subwoofer outputs to the speakers.
There’s also quite a bit of setup required, with 6 speakers to position and set up. Luckily the rear speakers come with extra length in the cables so you can put them where you need them.
Once set up, the speakers are pretty impressive. With excellent bass and a powerful, crisp sound perfectly suited to a medium-sized room.
The wired-in volume control is handy as well. I would have liked a bass adjustment on there too. Instead, you’ll need to reach round to the subwoofer to make adjustments.
For a gamer’s first foray into the surround sound market, these speakers can’t go too far astray here. With quality sound and the versatility that comes with small satellite speakers, they’re excellent mid-range gaming speakers.
Razer Leviathan – Elite Gaming Soundbar: Fanboy’s Choice
Razer is new to the sound niche but I have to admit that this soundbar took me by surprise. Super-simple under monitor setup really sounds great
If there is one gaming brand that stands out beyond all the rest it would have to be that glowing green snake we all know and love as Razer.
‘Built by gamers – for gamers’.
And now finally Razer have weighed in on the speaker market with the Leviathan soundbar.
Rather than go for a standard speaker system, Razer has opted for a bluetooth enabled soundbar.
Dark and brooding below your gaming screen, the Leviathan blasts out phenomenal sound quality. It also comes with a separate stand-alone subwoofer to give a real level of depth to the sound.
Software-wise, it has selectable equalizer options to optimise the sound quality for what you may be using it for. And the Bluetooth connectivity means you can play anything you want through it.
One issue we have with the Leviathan is that it doesn’t come with a remote control. That said, the soundbar is designed for PC use and so we expect to be sitting in front of it most of the time.
If you have the budget, get the Razer Leviathan. It’s a great high-end choice for a gaming speaker setup with great looks and excellent sound quality to match.
Products Featured in This Review
The list of gaming speakers above is a great set of options for excellent sound at reasonable prices. I’ll keep it updated as models change and technology advances, but there’s nothing on that list that can’t give you at least 3-5 years of steady hardcore gaming.
If your budget is, say, $50 or less then go ahead and grab a 2.1 multichannel system from above. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that a good 5.1 system doesn’t sound better, but budget is budget. Nobody’s gonna defend your wallet like you, man.
And don’t buy a system for wattage. Oh no!
The dumbest gaming speaker mistake you can make is getting some tiny plastic box with tissue-thin speakers and trying to cram 250 watts through it. Your ears are gonna hate you, your neighbors are gonna let their dogs crap on your lawn, and your goldfish will be floating at the top of its bowl before your first boss battle ends.
Remember, we want loud and clear when we are gaming, NOT I’m-at-a-death-metal-concert sound violence. All the setups I posted above have the right wattage for their components to really shine.
If you have the patience to setup a nice speaker system and configure your sound card to maximize the effect, you’re going to enter a seriously special gamer realm. And you’ll thank me.
It’s gonna be glorious.
PS: I’ve recently posted a deep-dive roundup of the best gaming glasses on the market. It’s cool if you haven’t yet heard about what they can do for you, but if you spend significant time looking at screens each day, you’ll be amazed by the damage it can do without the proper eye protection.
I spent the last two weeks of October in bed. For about a month before that, I had been experiencing headaches that no one could explain. I’m one of those guys who never had headaches when growing up, but these became so bad that my primary care doctor sent me to have a CAT scan done.
To make a long story short, a specialist who was looking at my results finally referred me to get my eyes tested. An ophthalmologist asked me a lot of detailed questions about my job, my sleep patterns and even my diet. When I told him how much time I spend in front of digital screens, he ordered a whole series of tests for me.
We found out what the cause was, and unfortunately the problem was even worse than the horrible headaches that were suddenly affecting my life.
The name for all this damage is called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), but phone and tablet screens are equally guilty of ruining our eyes over time and causing a whole list of bad things. We spend amazing numbers of hours in front of electronic device screens these days and the digital eye strain is beginning to have a permanent effect on society.
Have You Heard of Artifical Blue Light?
When a digital screen projects an image, it uses a ton of artificial blue light. This blue light consists of wavelengths between 415 and 495 nanometers. When this light hits the eye, proteins referred to as “opsins” attach to the photons to allow more light particles into the eye. These particles penetrate the eye all the way back to the retina. This can cause long-term damage like cataracts. It has also been linked to sleep disorders.
It’s incredibly hard for our eyes to process light in that specific spectrum and the cumulative digital eye strain after working or gaming for long hours on end can lead to headaches, blurry vision… even sleepless nights. Blue light eye strain messes up your body’s ability to create the necessary levels of melatonin for you to get a healthy night of sleep. Without good sleep, your brain never feels restored and your work or study really suffers,
A recent study by Northwestern University showed that blue light triggers other troubling chemical reactions in the brain. These can affect the body’s metabolism and lead to an insulin resistance. This, in turn, could lead to weight gain and even increase the risk of diabetes.
But what’s even worse is when you might experience when you’ve been staring at these screens for years. It’s believed that excessive blue light exposure and digital eye strain can trigger the start of irreversible conditions like age-related macular degeneration.
Bottom line: We have to cut way back on the artificial blue light that we are consuming.
What are Computer Glasses and Why Do I Need Them?
Let’s face it, most of us don’t control a good bit of the hours that we have to spend in front of the screen. My day job for example, puts me in front of a 24-inch monitor for at least six or seven hours every workday, and sometimes more. And I don’t have any control over the type of monitor that my company buys for me to use. Even though there are monitors now that limit the amount of artificial blue light you have to stare at, the chances are overwhelming that employees don’t have those.
So then, if you like to go home after a long day and unwind with some hard-core gaming, the potential is there to strain your eyes so badly that you can’t even get a halfway decent sleep. You’ll wake up the next day wondering why you don’t feel rested and your eyes look tired and feel worn out.
Between our work and gaming lifestyles, the majority of us are spending 12 to 16 hours every single day looking at some type of a digital screen. That’s one of the reasons that computer glasses have become so popular.
A study by the vision council found that nearly 70% of American adults experience some form of digital eye strain. Word is getting out about the long-term dangers of digital eyestrain, and some great companies are using the latest technology to help us protect our eyes.
As you can see there are real concerns about the impact of blue light that screens produce. The benefits of reducing the impact blue light can have on your whole life is significant.
The blue light that gaming glasses filter out consists of wavelengths between 415 and 495 nanometers. When this light hits the eye, proteins referred to as “opsins” attach to the photons to allow more light particles into the eye. These particles penetrate the eye all the way back to the retina. This can cause long-term damage like cataracts. It has also been linked to sleep disorders.
Computer Glasses are Even Becoming Stylish
We are also getting more selection and style all the time. When I first learned about the issue, you were mostly limited to gaming glasses with a strong yellow tint that would probably be totally fine to wear when hanging out in your living room, but would look pretty odd to wear all day at work.
But now you can find computer classes that look exactly like normal glasses. Some even have built-in reading magnification and/or the ability to use your regular vision prescription, so that you can use them for everything that you do during the day.
We even found new models that can clip onto your existing glasses! Now you can block harmful blue light even if your current eyeglass prescription is pretty specialized.
In fact, they’re becoming so popular that commercial partnerships are being made. An example is the partnership between MLG, the competitive gaming community, and Gunnar gaming glasses.
Gaming glasses, especially when worn at night, are a huge help in reducing eye strain and preventing future sight problems.
We Spent Many Hours Finding the Best Gaming Glasses
This guide to the best gaming glasses will take you through some of the most popular on the market. We’ve spent hours testing these glasses. We’ve compared their features and benefits and ultimately, their value for money.
What to Look For (and Avoid) When Buying Gaming Glasses
The main things to look and avoid when buying gaming glasses are:
- Get glasses with amber tinted lens as these will reduce the effects of blue light.
- Ensure they have adequate anti-reflective coatings on the lenses to reduce glare.
- Make sure your prescription is available in the style and model of gamer glasses you want.
- DO NOT buy on the style alone. Yes, looking good is important. But make sure your gamer glasses provide you with the level of protection you need.
- A larger price tag doesn’t always mean a better product.
The Best Gaming Glasses: Our Top Recommendations
Best of the Best: Gunnar MLG Phantom
Our Two Left Sticks Top Pick goes to the Gunnar MLG Phantom gaming glasses.
When you unbox these glasses from Gunnar you will notice their pleasant design. They look good and they’re functional. The wrap-around shape of the lenses give you get peripheral vision. The slender size of the frames makes them comfortable and they don’t impair your vision at all.
We did have some concerns that if the glasses are worn for a long period of time they might start to feel heavy. Potentially causing the irritation and eye strain they were designed to reduce.
But, they only weight 59g and have a good level of adjustment available using the silicone nose pads. As a result, there was little to no irritation at all and after a while, we forgot we were wearing them.
The specific frames we tested were the Onyx amber ones in the Gunnar MLG Phantom series. Their light and slender nature concerned us in that they initially appeared to be more fragile than some other gaming glasses we tried. They were actually pretty solid!
In fact, their comfortable, flexible nature meant we could use them with almost any gaming headset quite comfortably. You might find they take some getting used to though.
Gunnar Optiks are one of the leading names in the gaming glasses industry. Any product with their name on it should be great as they all use the same technology that Gunnar Optiks have patented.
They refer to these innovative technologies as:
- FRACTYL lens geometry
- DIAMIX lens material
- IONIK lens tints, and
- i-FI lens coatings
All those fancy names for glasses might sound impressive but we wanted to know what they meant to you.
Gunnar claim that FRACTYL lens geometry providing the best focus and clarity. By wrapping the lens around the face, it reduces air currents around the eye, preventing from drying out. This sounds great and would be useful to those people who can’t blink. For the rest of us, this might be a bit of a marketing gimmick that’s meant to sound cool.
Their second claim is that the DIAMIX material used in the lenses creates a clear and distortion free gaming experience. They also claim to be scratch resistant. We found that the lenses were clear and distortion free. But, remember, ‘scratch resistant’ and ‘scratch proof’ aren’t the same thing. If you abuse them, they will scratch like any other glasses.
The Gunnar Optiks IONIK lens tints are the main reason these particular glasses came top of our list of the best gaming glasses. The distinctive Gunnar yellow tint to the lens, reduces the amount of blue light that enters your eyes. This is in our opinion, the whole reason you would buy gaming glasses in the first place.
The fourth element to Gunnar Optiks patented formula is the i-Fi lens coating. This doesn’t mean your gaming glasses will be able to connect to the internet (much to our disappointment). It refers to the hard coat applied to the lens which prevents scratching. Which as we have already made note of, works fine until the glasses are abused.
Overall, we think these are the best gaming glasses on the market. They offer arguably the best protection against the harmful blue light and they are comfortable.
There is a potential downside though…
For some, they can break the gaming immersions as there is a slight yellow tint to the game. In our opinion though, that’s a price worth paying for fewer headaches and a better all-round gaming experience.
Although priced towards the higher end of the market, the cost is reasonable – and you do get what you pay for.
The only way Gunnar could make these gaming glasses better is by putting Bluetooth on them.
Because, well, everything is better with Bluetooth!

Gunnar Optiks Intercept
These Gunnar Intercept computer gaming glasses zoom in to second place for all the right reasons. They do the job, are very well made, have a great brand name and have a pleasing design. With the thick lens they are up to the task of filtering out the blue light emitted from our gaming screens.
After a few hours of gaming followed by writing this review wearing these glasses our eyes do not feel tired at all. The only reason these gaming glasses are not on the top of our list is because we didn’t like the style of them as much as we did the Phantoms. This is purely a personal taste issue.
The only downside as far as we can see, taking our personal taste out of the equation, is that we found it a bit difficult to wear these and wear our headphones at the same time. If you’re a gamer who wears over the ear or on ear headphones then you may struggle to like this style. You’d be better off going for the Gunnar MLG Phantom series instead.

Spektrum Premium Professional Review
These Spektrum video game glasses ranked a close second for us.
Made with high-quality optic glass, the lenses use modern technologies to filter out a lot of blue light. And unlike the Gunnar’s they didn’t taint colours of the screen while gaming.
Whilst these glasses do have a slight amber tint they look just like regular glasses. Wearing them in public is not as much of an issue for the image conscious.
We noticed there was a slight magnification to these glasses which put us off to start with as it took a bit of time to get used to. That said, after a while playing some Star Wars Battlefront 2 we got used to them. In fact, we found the slight magnification made text somewhat clearer and less of a strain to read.
They didn’t make the top pick for our list because we felt they didn’t offer quite as good protection against blue light.
For us, they weren’t as comfortable, they were a little bit heavier on the face than the Gunnar MLG Phantoms. The magnification got a bit annoying too. But they are cheaper and are less obviously tinted than the Gunnar Glasses.
The Spektrum Premium computer glasses are less of a gamer glasses and more for general computer use. This makes them our runner-up as they can be used more generally and at a lower price point.
But if you’re a hard core gamer, choose the Gunnars.
Special Mention: The Duco Optiks Clip on Gaming Glasses
We included these glasses as they are a good option for those who wear prescription glasses.
Gunnar Optiks will make gaming glasses with your prescription lens, but they do have a cost. If you don’t have that kind of budget, a good alternative are the Duco Optiks Clip on gaming glasses. They turn your normal prescription glasses into gaming glasses.
As the name suggests they clip on your normal glasses. They’re made of a high-quality plastics and out of the box, they come with a hard case, a cleaning cloth, and an adjustment tool.
They seem to fit well to our existing glasses and flip up and down allowing us to swap between the two lenses easily.
That said, if you flip between gaming and non-gaming regularly, they do smudge. It seemed we were forever taking them off to clean the smudges off the lenses.
These Duco Clip on Optiks are a good cheaper alternative to getting a custom made prescription gaming glasses. They’re well made, easy to fit as well and offer great protection against the blue light.
After wearing them to play Fortnite Battle Royale for a few hours we had no problems with eye straining at all.

The Wrap Up
Here’s the bottom line. I just don’t see any way that I can go make a living and come home to enjoy the gaming I love so much without being in front of digital screens for at least 12 hours a day. And I think most of our visitors to the site are facing that same issue.
That really means that the question isn’t whether or not to get computer glasses, but which are the best computer classes to spend our money on. If everybody had the same eye situation, I would just recommend the Gunnar Optiks MLG Phantom glasses and call it a day. Hands down, they are the most effective for the job (in my opinion), and the price is definitely right.
But the real world isn’t that simple. You probably won’t want to wear those glasses at work, and I can’t blame you. The Spektrum Prospek glasses have a total edge there, because you won’t look like a weirdo at the office.
And if you already have a really complex eyeglass prescription, slipping the Duco Optiks on over you every day classes is the way to go. I wish we didn’t require so many choices, but that’s beyond our control.
What we can control is how we take care of our eyes. Don’t even wait for gaming glasses to be everywhere before you go ahead and get some. For what it’s worth, I do think they’ll be almost required equipment pretty soon, but you can definitely get the jump on a whole bunch of immediate and long-term health issues by starting to wear them now.
If my own experience doesn’t convince you, study up on the research yourself. It scared me worse than I can even explain to think that I had something major going on, but I was really happy to know that the solution turned out to be something so effective and also inexpensive.
If You Have a Minute
I’ve also published review roundup of the best gaming chairs, best gaming desks and best gaming speakers. I think each of them will steer you straight if you’re looking to make some decisions in those areas.
